Anybody have any information on this (aligning the gap side of the ground electrode with the cylinder)? I know how to do it, but was unsure if it had any effect on performance.

This is a trick used on automotive heads that have the spark plug go in at an angle. If the spark plug goes in the center of the top of the head I can not see any benefit. If it goes in at an angle like on a lot of two valve motors there might be a slight difference but I doubt it would be anything you can feel.
