Went to the ATVA Quad MX yesterday in Walnut IL and it was awesome. Met Joe Byrd and talked to him for a minute and got a couple autographed posters. Spoke with Travis Spader and his mechanic Paul Turner. Got autographed posters from Pat Brown, Chad Wienen, Doug Gust, Jeremy Lawson, Mike Brown, Justin Brees. All of the pro's were very friendly and approachable. Wienen was all smiles and said he had heard of the Two Rivers Club. Gust was kinda quiet but he has been doing this for 20 years. Joe Byrd and Pat Brown were the most talkative guys. Joe Byrds Honda rig is awesome the front truck has about 10'x20' camper box on the back and then it pulls a trailer with full graphics that is at least 30 feet long. It was not open at the time but looked awesome on the outside. He had his bike and his wife Heather's out on display. Under the Suzuki tent while the rider's were signing mechanics were going over the bikes so that was cool to watch for a while. They put a new chain on Gust's bike and a few things to Weinen's. They must have missed something on Chad's quad cause he broke down about half way through. Fox Shocks and Maxxis had huge trailers there and so did Rockstar and Elka. There was no one around the Elka trailer though.
I missed the first Pro moto by about 20 minutes but watched the rest of the afternoon amaturs and then the second pro moto. Everything was very on time which I'm not used to at the races. Byrd went 1-1 on the weekend. He has a very unique riding style and body position but it obviously works for him. He rides with a lot of body weight over the bars unless sitting. He had about a 40 yard lead over Brown, Weinen and Lawson the whole way. Gust finished 4th but seemed to be off his game most of the way.
I thought it was interesting that there was not a single Kawie in the pro class. I did see about 5 total in other classes though. Visibility for watching the races was great at the track.
I definitly plan on making it out all day next year. It was pretty awesome. I wanna try to make a WPSA in Taylorville IL too if possible next year.
