After doing some serious riding ;D Thursday I started thinking about riding protection in case of a mishap. I would think a helmet would be at the top of the list ,what are some other items that you would consider a must have and do you have any stories to go along with your suggestion?

Helmet is definitely first.
Then goggles. Goggles will keep dust, dirt, mud, low hanging branches and other debris out of your eyes. They will feel odd at first, but you will learn to get used to them. Stick to a name brand that you can get at a dealer, they make a variety of tinted lenses to fit if u wish to change them later.
I would put boots next. At least over the ankle work boots. No tennis shoes. If you plan to be in the water at all, water proof boots for sure!
Next up, I'd recommend leather riding gloves. Not just a pair of leather gloves for the farm. A pair of actual riding gloves made for atv/motorcycle. The will give you better grip on the bars, and won't make your hands sore. Let's not forget, the grips won't turn your hands black anymore.
I'll let someone else cover any other protective gear.
