Today we were up at Waterloo and I think everyone had a great time. There were 7 club members up there and we had the whole park to ourselves. We all rode together pretty much all day.
The snow was deep in some places but we were able to get through almost everywhere. Four wheel drive was a must out there today.
Five of us showed up about 10 am at the park and the weather was perfect. I think everyone was shedding clothes by the end of the day because it was so tropical out there ( I think it got up to 40 today woohoo). We got our stuff ready and went out riding not knowing what to expect.
When we first went out riding the snow was pretty fluffy and easy to get through. A few spots you had to rock back and forth to get through but not to bad. We rode the perimeter trail and followed in some snowmobile tracks that were already there. Its was like going to an amusment park and riding on one of the rides where all you have to do is press the gas and the car does all the steering. We were out there for a while and decided to go back and see if anyone else had shown up. On our way back we ran into 2 more club members. One of them was on their two wheel drive quad and I think he got about 200 yards before deciding it was time to get the 4 wheel drive out.
While they were swapping bikes another member and I went riding on our own for a little bit. I went to take a different path than him and as soon as my tires got out of his tracks my quad decided it didn't want to carry me anymore. So it sent me sailing and tipped to its side. I was going at most 10 mph and landed in a foot of snow so nothing was damaged on me or the bike. I decided that I should take a breather and wait for him to notice I was not behind him anymore. So about 10 min later he came back. Well maybe not ten minutes, but he did admit that he may have been daydreaming a bit ;D. We rode around for a bit then decided to head back to the parking lot to see if we could meet up with the rest group.
We all went out as a group again and definatly noticed that the snow was starting to change. The warm weather was making the snow and ground a lot wetter. The snow would have been great for a snowball fight at this point. There we a couple of hills that earlier in the day were no problem to get up, and now they were so slick that you could barely manage to get to the top because your tires were spinning so much.
At one point one of the guys found a patch of ice that was large enough that we could get spinning pretty fast. The area around the ice was a wide open field that had some drifts and small mounds. We all hung around here for a while seeing how dizzy we could make ourselves and who could get through which drifts. After we were done here it was getting close to time to pack it up so we took the long way back to the parking lot and got things ready to go home at about 3pm.
I had a great time riding with the group today. We were able to ride all over the place. My gps said we rode 26 miles throughout the day. My four wheeler said 32 so there was a little bit of tire spinning going on.
Another neat thing that happened today is that we kept coming across deer. I think at one point I saw about eight of them running through the woods.
If you have a 4wd quad and sat at home today you missed out on a great ride. I hope to see you guys at the next ride!
