 400EX back from the grave
« Thread Started on Jan 2, 2010, 8:33pm »

Well I picked up this gem about 6 months ago and did not have much time to work on it at first but I have made a lot of progress lately. The piston and cylinder where toast so I had the cylinder bored to a 416cc with a new 11:1 piston. I also enjoyed cutting out a Lonestar stainless steel swingarm bolt but eventually it came out.

Thanks to Mark at Quad City Quad Doctor / CPR Powersports for the cylinder bore and parts.

Here's what I started with...

Here is the motor tore down to check out the transmission, crank and all internal bearings. A few things that showed some wear were replaced and a complete seal kit was put in.

It was a nice surprise to find this quad had a Hot Rods aftermarket crank in it that is in basically new condition. The cost of that new crank is more than what I paid for the whole thing... 8-)

Here is some of the reassembly. All of the valves were taken out and cleaned / checked. New valve seals were put in. Everything looked really good here.

Here is the painted frame and chassis going together. The axle and swingarm bearings and seals were replaced with Pivot Works kits. The front a-arms are stock but off a 400 with a little less mileage. All bearings and ball joints are in good shape.

So now its a roller and the motor is done. Just gotta put the motor in and buy a battery for it. Should be started by next weekend.

This quad will be ridden enough to break in the motor and make sure there are no issues. Then its up for sale. The price will be determined by what the buyer wants on it. It can come with stock tires and stock shocks or some gently used GBC X-Rex tires and re-valved 450r shocks. Trying to decide what to do with the plastic situation too. The red plastic I have is pretty rough in the front.

I will update the story as I get more done. There is a small chance it will make a debut at the upcoming ice ride.

Perhaps I will insure it then test some thin ice...%-)

So that's what you do when you're not rodeoing the down trees at Kenny's.

Great Story! I had a tear seeing her in that barn up on logs.

Ifin you decide (who do I sound like?) to get rid of the re-valved shocks, I may know a fella who'd buy them.

Does this fella have some shocks to go onto this quad?

Made a lot more progress today. The motor is in, chain on, frame skid on, etc... Went over all of the wiring and made sure there are no bad wires. Will get a battery tomorrow and it should fire tomorrow night.

It starts and runs good. Shifts smoothly through all the gears and the clutch seems very good. Need to do some tuning on the carb and several other little things like clean up some wiring, front end alignment, bleed the brakes and put the body on. So far I am real happy with it.

Here's how it looks now with a few more things on it.

Another question, do the 450's have more room than that Raptor u had? I'm looking again but not sure if a 450 will be comfy enuff to ride for me.

I would say the raptor and 400/450 Honda's are very similar with a slight edge to the Raptor in rider size accomidations.

The 400EX chassis is nearly identical to the 400EX. It would be tough to find a better quad than this one for under 2 grand. Call me quick if you want this. There is a very interested buyer looking at it tomorrow. like Tommy Cruise says... SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

$1900 takes it home. Play Happy Birthday on your cowbell and I could go slightly lower. 563.529.4267
